Free radicals can damage your cells and have been linked to heart disease, some cancers, and many other diseases. So, what can you do about this? Antioxidants have been shown to have a positive effect on your cells and their ability to combat problems with free radicals. Your intake of antioxidants can be increased many different ways. There are many foods and vitamins that carry antioxidants.
Naturally found in vitamins A, C, and E among others, antioxidants can be taken in the form of a supplement. These supplements come in powders, tablets, capsules, and liquids. You can choose which one is right for you. Many foods also carry antioxidants. While these include fruits, vegetables, and nuts that many people consider healthful already, there are also foods that contain antioxidants that many do not usually put first on the healthy list. This would include meats, poultry and fish.
It has been observed that people who eat a lot of foods rich in beta-carotene are not generally prone to cancer. However, the beta-carotene antioxidant supplements didn’t last that long in the industry. It seemed that in most major trials designed to see whether taking extra beta-carotene antioxidant supplements could ward off cancer, beta-carotene didn’t do a good job at it. Worse, beta-carotene antioxidant supplements and pills seemed to increase rates of cancer for smokers in two large trials.
No matter what form your antioxidants come in, your health can only benefit from their power. Antioxidants have even recently been linked to improved mental status with those who are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Adding antioxidants to your diet through food or supplement is a great thing for you to do for your body.
